Platelet-rich plasma (PRP)

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections are a non-surgical treatment that can help with hair loss by stimulating hair growth and rejuvenation. PRP injections use a patient's own blood, which is high in platelets, to concentrate platelets and then inject them into the scalp. Platelets release growth factors, stem cells, and proteins that promote hair follicle health. PRP injections can be effective for male pattern baldness, androgenetic alopecia, and stimulating hair growth after hair transplants.

The procedure involves:

PRP injections are usually performed in a series of monthly treatments, followed by less frequent maintenance sessions.

  1. Blood draw: A small amount of blood is drawn from a vein in the arm and collected in a test tube.

  2. Centrifugation: A centrifuge spins the blood to separate the platelets from other blood cells.

  3. Anesthesia: A local anesthetic is applied to the scalp to minimize discomfort.

  4. Injection: The concentrated platelets are injected into the scalp at the site of hair loss or thinning.

Risks and Considerations of PRP Injections

PRP injections are generally considered safe when performed by a trained medical provider, but they can be expensive and may not be suitable for everyone. Mild risks include pain, redness, headaches, and temporary hair shedding. PRP may not be appropriate for those with a history of bleeding disorders or autoimmune disease.
